Most people look at a hat from the outside. They see the crown, the brim, and the color. But a good hat is built in layers, and every part has a job. Here is what is inside a Diamond G hat, from the first piece of felt to the last finishing touch.
The felt body
Every hat starts as a felt body. It is a cone of pressed fur fiber, and it sets the limit for everything that follows. A weak body cannot make a strong hat. How much beaver is in the felt sets its X rating, although many hype their X rating for marketing independent of beaver content. We covered that in our felt grade post.
The crown
The crown is the top of the hat. Its shape and crease give the hat its name. A cattleman and a pinch front are different creases on the same basic body.
The brim
The brim frames your face. We set it with steam and shaping tools. Width and curl change the whole look. A flat brim says one thing. A tight curl says another.
The sweatband
The sweatband sits inside the crown, against your forehead. It takes the sweat and helps the hat hold its shape. Ours carry the Diamond G mark on a premium softened leather. Premium components for a premium hat.
The liner
The liner is the soft layer inside the crown. It protects the felt from the oils in your hair and skin. It also adds comfort.
The trim
The band around the base of the crown is the trim. It adds color and character. On the Gateway Edition, the trim goes further. It goes even further with a silver feather from Montana Silversmiths.
The fit
A great hat that does not fit is a bad hat. Most heads are not round. We use a conformer to read the true shape of your head. Then we use the Formillion Pro to shape the hat to match it. The hat fits like it was made for you, because it was.
