If you’ve ever wondered why our hats carry a four-point diamond instead of our last name spelled out, or a longhorn, or some version of the word “western” stitched into the sweatband — this is that story.

It starts on a show cattle farm outside Geneseo, Illinois, where I grew up. That’s where I first understood what it means to build something with patience — animals don’t respond to shortcuts, and neither does good craftsmanship. That lesson followed me a lot further than the farm did.

Life took me a long way from Geneseo before it brought me back to hats. I spent years in corporate America — beverage, retail, private equity — sitting in boardrooms, chasing quarterly numbers, managing what other people built instead of building something myself. It was a good career. It also wasn’t mine. Eventually I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was supposed to be making something with my hands.

The idea for Diamond G took shape in the fall of 2023. That journey gave me the opportunity to learn from two of the most respected hatmakers in the business. That January, I sat down with Brooks Atwood in Frankston, Texas, for what was really just friendly advice from someone who’d been doing this a lot longer than I had. In April of 2024, I connected with Jeff Biggar in Decatur — a conversation that’s turned into a real, ongoing friendship; Jeff and I talk regularly to this day. That same month, Diamond G ran its first events.

I’ve kept learning ever since, and honestly, that’s my favorite part of this business. Every trip, every hatter I get to sit down with, teaches me something a little different — and I’ve come to think of it like a salad bar. Nobody builds their plate the same way. You get shown all the options — different approaches to shaping, different philosophies on building a hat — and the job is figuring out your own version of the perfect plate. I’ve chased that education across North America, because the more options you’ve seen, the better you understand what you actually want to build.

Why the diamond. Why four points.

When it came time to build a logo, I didn’t want something borrowed from someone else’s brand or pulled off a mood board. I wanted a mark that meant something every single time I looked at it — because I was going to be looking at it for the rest of my life.

The four points of our diamond represent my family. Not as a slogan, not as a marketing angle — literally. Every hat that leaves our shop carries my wife and our two kids on it, whether anyone else knows that or not. That’s the whole point of the mark, honestly. It doesn’t need to be explained to mean something. It just needs to be true.

What that means for how we build

A family mark comes with a family standard. That shows up in decisions you’ll see and plenty you won’t — the felt grade we build to, the shaping process we won’t rush, the finishing touches we won’t skip even when skipping them would be easier and cheaper. And unlike some in this business, we’re not keeping the felt grade a secret. We’d rather educate our customers on what they’re buying than let quality be something you just have to take our word for. You take the time and you do it right, because your family’s shape is stitched into every one.

It also shows up in our faith, which is the other thread running through everything we do here. We don’t hide that, and we’re not going to start. Craftsmanship, family, and faith aren’t three separate boxes for us — they’re the same box, just looked at from different angles.

Where this is headed

We’re a Missouri hat company built by a guy who grew up on an Illinois cattle farm, learned from hatmakers across Texas and beyond, and was shaped by a decade-plus in industries that had nothing to do with felt or brims. That’s an unusual path into this business. But it’s why Diamond G doesn’t look, sound, or operate like anyone else’s version of a western hat brand — because it isn’t built off anyone else’s story. It’s built off ours.

Every hat we make carries that same four-point diamond — a mark that started with my family but has come to represent everything Diamond G stands for: craftsmanship, integrity, faith, and doing things the right way. It’s more than our logo. It’s our standard, our signature, and a reminder of who we’re building this for.

That’s what the Diamond G means. And that’s the mark we’re proud to put on every hat that leaves our hands.
